On September 10th 2019 we held our 5th Annual Golf Tournament in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year in which our suppliers, partners, managers, volunteers, and friends all get together for one common objective - to help improve the lives of those affected by cancer. The event was once again a great success due to the hard work of our charity committee and on-going support of our sponsors. Getting here however has not been easy. It’s been a long road full of obstacles along the way for our team. The original idea for a fundraiser dates back to 2013, when we collectively decided to join the fight against cancer as many of our own employees, and their families have been in one way or another greatly affected by the disease. Our first year, we did not organize a tournament but rather a driving range marathon with a similar purpose as the tournament. The idea was to hold a 12 hour marathon where golfers would hit as many balls as they could in this time period – and thus the idea for the fundraiser was born! |
We took a bit of a break from golf from 2013-2015 but continued to raise money in other fun ways. We revamped the event in 2016 and ironed out all the kinks to ensure all participants have a wonderful experience. Our venue for the past 4 years has been the amazing Red Crest Golf Club which boasts a premium course, with beautiful scenery and overall great atmosphere. The playing format now allows players to make up their own foursomes to compete as teams with additional games in between holes to allow for more prizes and bonus points to be earned. Although it is a golf tournament, and all rules of the game apply, there is much more to this function.
Attendees enjoyed lunch, dinner, and drinks to complement their 18-holes. After dinner we had our usual raffles, and auctions which are pillars of our fundraising efforts. Among the most coveted raffle prizes were: tickets to a NHL game, a NBA game, one week stay at a Florida condo, passes for day cruises as well as gift cards for electronic stores and of course, golf shops. These attractive items made attendees more willing to shell out the big bucks in support of cancer research.
This year we raised a total of $67,000, bringing our 5 year grand total to $337,000. This makes us extremely proud, and encourages us to keep going! We are committed to making a difference in our community and through events like these we are able to continue to reach our objectives.
